Your garbage disposal is a convenience, not a trash can. Using it correctly will extend its life and prevent costly drain clogs. Here's what every Round Rock homeowner should know.

Do's

Do Run Cold Water

Always run cold water before, during, and for 15-30 seconds after using the disposal. Cold water helps solidify grease so it can be chopped up and flushed away rather than coating your pipes.

Do Cut Large Items First

Cut large food scraps into smaller pieces before putting them in the disposal. Smaller pieces process more easily and reduce strain on the motor.

Do Clean Regularly

Once a month, clean and freshen your disposal:

  • Grind ice cubes to sharpen and clean blades
  • Add citrus peels (lemon, orange, lime) for fresh scent
  • For deep cleaning, pour 1/2 cup baking soda, then 1 cup vinegar

Do Use It Regularly

Run your disposal at least every few days, even if you don't have scraps. Regular use prevents rust and corrosion and keeps parts moving freely.

Do Know the Reset Button

Most disposals have a reset button on the bottom. If it suddenly stops working, wait 5 minutes and press the reset button before calling for help.

Don'ts

Don't Put Grease Down It

Grease is the enemy of your plumbing. It coats the blades, reduces efficiency, and solidifies in your pipes causing major clogs. Dispose of grease in the trash.

Don't Grind Fibrous Foods

Avoid celery, corn husks, artichokes, asparagus, and onion skins. Fibers can wrap around the blades and jam the motor.

Don't Dispose of Expandables

Rice and pasta expand with water—they swell in your pipes and cause blockages. Small amounts are okay, but don't dump a pot of pasta water.

Don't Grind Hard Items

Keep out bones, fruit pits, shells (seafood, egg, nut), and seeds. These can damage or dull the blades.

Don't Use Hot Water While Grinding

Hot water melts grease, which then re-solidifies in your drain pipes. Use cold water instead.

Don't Put Non-Food Items In

Never put glass, plastic, metal, paper, rubber bands, or string in your disposal. These can damage blades and jam the motor.

Don't Use Harsh Chemicals

Avoid drain cleaners and harsh chemicals. They can damage disposal components and are harmful to your sewer line.
