Selecting the correct water heater size is crucial. Too small and you'll run out of hot water during morning showers; too large and you'll waste energy heating water you don't use. Our water heater installation team can help you choose the perfect size.

Tank Water Heaters: Sizing by Gallons

Household Size Guidelines

These guidelines assume typical usage patterns:

  • 1-2 people: 30-40 gallons
  • 2-3 people: 40-50 gallons
  • 3-4 people: 50-60 gallons
  • 5+ people: 60-80 gallons

Consider Your Usage Patterns

These are starting points—adjust based on your habits:

  • Multiple people showering in the morning? Add 10-15 gallons
  • Have a large soaking tub? Add 20+ gallons
  • Run the dishwasher during peak times? Add 5-10 gallons
  • Do multiple loads of laundry in hot water? Add 10-15 gallons

First Hour Rating (FHR)

More important than tank size is the First Hour Rating—how much hot water the heater can supply in one hour starting with a full tank. This accounts for both tank size AND recovery speed.

Example: A 50-gallon tank with a high FHR might outperform a 60-gallon tank with a low FHR during peak demand.

Tankless Water Heaters: Flow Rate

Tankless units are sized by flow rate (GPM—gallons per minute) rather than tank capacity.

Calculate Your Simultaneous Needs

Add up hot water needs that might occur at the same time:

  • Shower: 2-3 GPM
  • Dishwasher: 1-2 GPM
  • Washing machine: 1.5-2 GPM
  • Bathroom sink: 0.5-1 GPM
  • Kitchen sink: 1-1.5 GPM

If two showers and a dishwasher might run simultaneously, you need a unit rated for at least 6-8 GPM.

Round Rock Water Quality Considerations

Central Texas has notoriously hard water, which affects water heater performance and lifespan. Consider:

  • Annual flushing to remove sediment buildup
  • Installing a water softener to extend heater life
  • Tankless models may require more frequent descaling
